Okay, to start off I'll give an example. First, I make the base sprite, no fancy selout tricks, just the base color, colored outline, and a little shading. Then I'll show you the product of correct shading, and finally I'll show incorrect shading, so you can see what not to do when making sprites.

 Here is a curved tube, fairly simple shape to draw. The base is a light blue, with a darker blue for the outline, and a color somewhere between the two for shading. I've skipped a couple of steps, but I'll go over those later in much more detail.

 Here is the tube with selout shading to the best of my ability. Notice that while it's outlined, the outlines aren't the same color and vary in thickness. This gives the sprite less of a flat look then normal, single colored outlines would. Now I'll show you how not to outline. Basically, don’t try this at home kids!!!

 The easiest way to tell this is wrong is to look in the corners, they're all light instead of dark. This is the exact opposite of the correct method. Take a look at it, don't pour over it too long, it's the last we'll ever see of it...
