The opacity technique is great for creating smooth, complex gradients of colors. It's not as precise as the other methods, but for the most part should suffice for most jobs.
-
Start with a line of pixels.

-
Choose a color to blend. Set the opacity of the brush to a lower value, around 30 - 50%. Draw over the line in multiple strokes. Each stroke blends into the existing color more and more.

-
Here's the same line with red added at 30%.

Using opacity can create millions of smooth color gradations. It's simple to understand, but takes a while to master. This technique is best suited for high color backgrounds. The previous techniques, for the most part, will yield satisfactory results.
