Tutorials: Colouring Techniques

Main Tutorials

Opacity

The opacity technique is great for creating smooth, complex gradients of colors. It's not as precise as the other methods, but for the most part should suffice for most jobs.

  1. Start with a line of pixels.

  2. Choose a color to blend. Set the opacity of the brush to a lower value, around 30 - 50%. Draw over the line in multiple strokes. Each stroke blends into the existing color more and more.

  3. Here's the same line with red added at 30%.

Using opacity can create millions of smooth color gradations. It's simple to understand, but takes a while to master. This technique is best suited for high color backgrounds. The previous techniques, for the most part, will yield satisfactory results.
