Tutorials: Colouring Techniques

Main Tutorials

Multiply

The multiply technique uses several layers set to multiply to shade a sprite in multiple steps.

  1. Start by choosing a base color and block in the major forms of the sprite. The base color should be the lightest shade desired.

  2. Create new layer set to multiply lower the opacity of the layer to around 30%. Using the same color used to block in the major forms, draw over the sprite where shadow should go.

  3. Create another layer set to multiply. To create darker shades use a higher opacity. Repeat this process for however many shades are desired.

As with the gray technique, this can get confusing. The sprite might end up having 4 or 5 layers. Erasing or adding a pixel in one layer may affect all the other layers with unwanted results. The solution for this is similar to the modified gray technique.
