Eyeballing is simply choosing colors on the fly. Color can be picked in any order, but usually it's best to work in one direction, e.g. from light to dark or dark to light.
-
Start with a base color, it's much easier to work from light to dark.
-
Next, choose a second color, usually a darker shade of the first color.
-
Repeat for however many shades are desired.
Here's an example of a sprite shaded with the colors from above:

When choosing colors, keep in mind how changing the RGBHSL values will affect the colors. Darker shades of a color usually have lower saturation than the ones above it, and almost always have a lower lightness. Hue on the other hand, usually doesn't change very much throughout the shades.
